Supra, a larger Podenco Ibicenco, is the sanctuary’s special sweetheart, come from Spain in 2016 when his rescuer there died in a car accident. We had heard about Supra the year before but the rescuer decided to keep him back then. When we heard the sad news of his death and Supra’s need for a new home, we renewed our offer of help. Supra arrived shortly thereafter and we discovered that he had been through some trauma before being rescued; it quickly became clear that there’s a good possibility that it could mean he ends up remaining with us–which would be fine. It’s obvious this guy has been through a lot of pain and we intend to make sure he has no more of it. He had been abused as a hunter’s dog, was very traumatized, and had two broken legs during his time on the streets of Spain. Yet Supra is a very sweet, gentle boy who is somewhat of a velcro dog to whomever he bonds with, wanting to walk and stand around with that person, looking into her eyes (ok and getting cookies), but until he trusts a person, he backs away from touching and getting too close. He is not aggressive; he simply backs up or runs off if an untrusted person tries to come near him. He is good with the other sanctuary dogs and is good on leash as well. We’ve posted him here because we want to make sure that we don’t keep him from a great situation that might be available for him, and because it was a hard for him when his ‘girlfriend’ Kona was recently adopted, so we feel it might be harder for him to continue to have his friends and roommates leave him; in fact he is now bonding even more strongly with his new friend, Zinnia, who is also up for adoption. In any case, Supra is just too sweet to not at least share about, but we’d only send him to an adoptive home if the person were very well qualified in proper behavioral methods and had the time, resources, inclination, personality, and lifestyle that he deserves and needs.
Supra is about 70 – 75 pounds, housetrained, knows COME, LEAVE IT/DROP IT (better in Spanish), and GO PEE. We have not worked the usual beginner training program with him because of his injuries and suspected related discomfort with sitting, etc., but he is very intelligent and bonded so would certainly learn whatever we asked of him that he was physically able to do.
